Petropavlovsk Heavy Engineering Plant: History of Success and Achievements

In the first years after the Great Patriotic War the history of the Petropavlovsk Heavy Engineering Plant began. On November 5, 1948 in accordance with the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR № 4137-1658 it was decided to build the plant in the city of Petropavlovsk.

The choice of this city was due to the availability of a large number of qualified specialists who arrived together with the evacuated plants. In 1953 Vladimir Fedorovich Petrov was appointed the first director of the plant under construction.

On March 30, 1961 the production activity of the plant began with the production of the first batch of grain loaders. Since 1962 the plant focused on the development and production of military rocket equipment, and in 1965 its products (launch units) were first presented at the military parade on November 7 on Red Square in Moscow.

In 1970, the plant established a steel investment casting section with a capacity of 160 tons per year. During the first five years the number of employees at the plant increased to a record number: 4000 people.

For labor achievements in 1971 Petropavlovsk Heavy Engineering Plant was named after V.I. Lenin by the resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan and the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR. Since that time the plant actively developed the production of agricultural machinery, including spreaders of mineral fertilizers, the number of which reached 10 thousand pieces per year, and exported products to such countries as France, England, Poland and Cuba.

In 1973, Vladimir Vasilyevich Efremov was appointed the director of the plant, who headed the plant for 21 years. Under his leadership JSC “PZTM” became one of the leading enterprises, successfully mastering new types of weapons and making a significant contribution to the defense capability of the country. The plant also produced civilian products, including agricultural machinery, trailers, bicycles, plastic buckets and helmets, which were supplied to more than 30 countries.

In 1979, a polyclinic, a preventorium, the Mashinostroitel Palace of Culture, a stadium, a sports palace, a House of Life and the Young Mashinostroitel pioneer camp were built for the plant's employees and their families. The plant also had its own airplane for transportation of equipment and materials. By 1979, the number of employees reached 14,000, 11,000 of whom worked directly in production.

In 2015, the plant was awarded the Altyn Sapa Prize of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for high performance. In 2023, PZTM athletes took third place in Astana, and the best young production employee, Alibek Uataev, won the “Yenbek Zholy” contest.

Today JSC “PZTM” is one of the largest enterprises in Kazakhstan manufacturing equipment for oil and gas production, oil and gas processing, petrochemical, chemical, gas, power and other industries on the basis of modern technologies. The enterprise has production facilities with all technological processes necessary for the production of various types of equipment.

Already in 2026 the enterprise will celebrate its 65th anniversary.
